The drive
About 490 kilometres and eight to nine hours via Ajmer, Beawar and Pali. The last stretch is the ghat road up from Abu Road — roughly 28 kilometres of hairpins that take about forty-five minutes and should not be rushed. We do not drive that section after dark if it can be avoided.
If you are also visiting Udaipur, it makes more sense to go Jaipur–Udaipur–Mount Abu than to drive straight down and back.
Why summer is the season
This is the inverse of the rest of Rajasthan. While Jaisalmer and Bikaner are at 45°C, Mount Abu is pleasant — which is exactly why April to June is its busiest and most expensive period. Book accommodation well ahead then. Winter is quiet and can drop near freezing at night; Mount Abu occasionally records the lowest temperature in Rajasthan.
What is there
- Dilwara Jain temples — the reason to come. Eleventh to thirteenth century marble carving of a delicacy that is difficult to describe and genuinely worth the drive. Photography is not permitted inside and there are timing restrictions for non-Jain visitors, so we plan arrival around them.
- Nakki Lake — boating, and the town’s centre of gravity in the evening.
- Sunset Point and Guru Shikhar — the latter the highest point in Rajasthan.
- Achalgarh fort and the Brahma Kumaris headquarters.
