Why the licence is not a technicality
At Amber Fort and the City Palace, only guides holding a valid government licence may guide inside. Jaipur has no shortage of unlicensed men waiting near the entrances offering their services. What happens next is predictable: they are stopped at the gate after you have paid, or moved along mid-tour, and you are the one standing there with a ruined morning.
Every guide we send holds a Regional Level Guide licence issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, and carries the card. You are welcome to ask to see it — licensed guides expect the question.

Guide fees are separate from monument entry tickets and from the car. If you’re booking a sightseeing cab too, adding the guide to the same booking is simpler than arranging both.

Where a guide matters most
Jantar Mantar, without question. Unguided it reads as a field of odd stone shapes. With a guide you learn that the world’s largest stone sundial, standing in front of you, still tells the time to within two seconds. It is the difference between a photo stop and the best twenty minutes of the day.
Amber Fort and the City Palace both reward a guide, though they’re enjoyable without one if you’ve read up. Markets, step-wells and photo stops need no guide at all.
A sensible middle path: hire a guide for the two or three monuments where it matters, and wander the rest yourself.

Why are some guides so much cheaper?
Usually because they are unlicensed, or because they work on commission from shops. A free or very cheap guide will steer you into gem and handicraft emporiums where they take a cut of whatever you buy.
