A Jaipur to Agra taxi covers about 240 kilometres and takes four to four and a half hours on the six-lane highway. Fatehpur Sikri and the Abhaneri step-well sit on the route and are the usual stops. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so day trips are planned around that.
This is the busiest single leg of the Golden Triangle, and the easiest drive in this list — six-lane highway almost the whole way.
The drive
About 240 kilometres and four to four and a half hours. Most guests do it as a one-way transfer, but a same-day return from Jaipur is genuinely possible if you leave by five in the morning: the Taj at sunrise, Agra Fort after breakfast, and back in Jaipur by evening. It is a long day and worth being honest about that before you book it.
Worth stopping for on the way
- Fatehpur Sikri — the Mughal capital abandoned within a few decades of being built, perfectly preserved in red sandstone. Forty kilometres short of Agra and the best stop on this route.
- Abhaneri — the Chand Baori step-well, thirteen storeys of symmetric stairs. A short detour and one of the most photographed places in Rajasthan.
- Bharatpur — the Keoladeo bird sanctuary, if you are travelling in winter and have the time.
One thing to plan around
The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday. If your only possible Agra day is a Friday, we will tell you before you book rather than after. Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are open, so the day is still worth doing — but not for the Taj.
