A Jaipur to Jodhpur taxi covers about 335 kilometres and takes five and a half to six hours by road, via Kishangarh and Merta City. The fare includes fuel, driver allowance, toll and state permits. Ajmer, Pushkar and Kuchaman Fort can be added as stops on the way without changing the route.

Jodhpur is the second city most people add after Jaipur, and the drive between them is one of the easier long runs in Rajasthan — good highway most of the way, with enough worth stopping for that the journey stops being dead time.

The drive

It is roughly 335 kilometres and takes five and a half to six hours of actual driving, via Kishangarh and Merta City. Leaving Jaipur by eight in the morning puts you in Jodhpur comfortably before lunch, with time for Mehrangarh the same afternoon.

Worth stopping for on the way

• Kishangarh — the marble town, and the painted Kishangarh school of miniatures. A short stop.
• Ajmer — the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, about two and a half hours out of Jaipur.
• Pushkar — the sacred lake and the Brahma temple, twenty minutes beyond Ajmer. Adding Ajmer and Pushkar turns the transfer into a full day rather than a half day, which is the version most people prefer.
• Kuchaman Fort — a dramatic hilltop fort most itineraries drive straight past.

What the fare covers

A one-way private cab with driver, fuel, driver allowance, and all toll and state permit charges. Nothing is added at the end of the trip. The only extras are stops that take the car well off the highway, quoted before you travel.

A round trip is the better value if you are coming back to Jaipur within a couple of days, because the return leg is charged at a lower rate than two separate one-way trips.

Once you are there

Mehrangarh Fort is the reason to come — it sits 120 metres above the blue town and is among the best-preserved forts in India. Jaswant Thada and the Toorji ka Jhalra step-well are both close by, and the clock-tower market below the fort is the best of the old city.
