A Jaipur to Ajmer and Pushkar taxi covers about 145 kilometres and takes two and a half to three hours each way. Both towns can be covered comfortably in one day, with the Ajmer Sharif Dargah in the morning and Pushkar lake and the Brahma temple in the afternoon. Toll and driver allowance are included.
Ajmer and Pushkar sit twenty minutes apart and are almost always done together. It is the easiest day trip out of Jaipur — close enough to leave after breakfast and be back the same night, and different enough from Jaipur to feel like you went somewhere.
The drive
About 145 kilometres and two and a half to three hours each way on good highway via Kishangarh. Most guests book it as a same-day return. An overnight stay in Pushkar is worth it if you want the lake at sunrise, which is when it is at its best.
Ajmer
The Dargah Sharif of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti is one of the most revered Sufi shrines in South Asia, visited across communities. The lanes approaching it are narrow and busy — the car parks a short walk away, and your driver will tell you exactly where to meet afterwards. Adhai Din ka Jhonpra, a twelfth-century mosque built from temple ruins, is a few minutes away and usually quiet.
Pushkar
Twenty minutes over the hill from Ajmer. The sacred lake with its fifty-two ghats, and the Brahma temple — one of very few temples to Brahma anywhere. The main bazaar is good for silver and textiles.
A word worth saying plainly: at the ghats you may be approached for a “Pushkar Passport” puja with a donation expected afterwards. Participate if you want to, but agree the amount beforehand, and know that no priest at the ghat has authority to set a fixed figure.
Timing
The Pushkar Camel Fair, usually in November, is extraordinary and also the one week when both towns are full. Book well ahead if you are coming then. During Urs at Ajmer the Dargah is very crowded, so we start early.
