A Jaipur to Salasar Balaji taxi covers about 140 kilometres direct, or about 180 kilometres if routed via Khatu Shyam Ji, taking around three hours. Most pilgrims combine both temples in one trip. Saturdays, Tuesdays and the Hanuman Jayanti and Chaitra Purnima melas are the busiest times.

Salasar Balaji, in Churu district, is one of the great Hanuman shrines of north India. It is almost always booked together with Khatu Shyam ji, and the two of them are the backbone of pilgrimage travel out of Jaipur.

The drive

About 140 kilometres direct via Sikar, roughly three hours. Routed via Khatu Shyam ji it becomes about 180 kilometres, which is how most guests do it. We start early — four or five in the morning — because both temples are far calmer before the coaches arrive.

When it is busiest

• Saturdays and Tuesdays, the days associated with Hanuman, are consistently the heaviest.
• Hanuman Jayanti and Chaitra Purnima both draw enormous crowds, and the Chaitra and Ashwin melas fill the town.

At the temple

The shrine is known for the distinctive gold and silver work around the sanctum. Coconut offerings tied with a thread are the traditional manat here, and the bazaar around the temple sells everything needed. Phones and bags are not permitted inside; lockers are available.

Making it a longer yatra

Salasar and Khatu together fit into one long day from Jaipur. Add Jeen Mata and Rani Sati Jhunjhunu and it becomes a comfortable two-day circuit. Going further south to Ajmer, Pushkar and Nathdwara makes it three or four days — that version is our Rajasthan Darshan yatra.
