A Jaipur to Ranthambore taxi covers about 160 kilometres to Sawai Madhopur and takes three to three and a half hours. Safari permits are limited, released in advance and sell out in peak season, so they must be booked ahead and in the traveller name. The park is closed to safaris from July to September.
Ranthambore is the closest place to Jaipur where you have a real chance of seeing a wild tiger, and the drive is short enough that people underestimate the one thing that actually decides the trip: the permit.
The drive
About 160 kilometres to Sawai Madhopur, three to three and a half hours via Tonk. Safaris run twice a day, early morning and afternoon, so the arrival day usually only works for an afternoon drive if you leave Jaipur early.
The permit is the whole trip
Safari permits are limited in number, released in advance, and issued in the traveller’s name with ID details. In season — October to March, and especially around Christmas and New Year — they sell out. Arriving without one and hoping to arrange something at the gate does not work.
We book permits ahead, in your name. For that we need your ID details in advance. This is the single most common reason a Ranthambore trip disappoints, and it is entirely avoidable.
What you can and cannot be promised
Nobody can guarantee a tiger. They are wild animals. What can be said honestly is that Ranthambore has one of the healthiest tiger populations in India and among the better sighting rates, and that two or three safaris across a stay improve the odds far more than any other factor. One safari is a coin toss.
When to go
October to March is the most comfortable. April to June is hot but often better for sightings, as animals come to water. The park is closed to safaris from July to September.
Beyond the safari
Ranthambore Fort inside the park is a tenth-century hilltop fort, free to enter and largely ignored by safari visitors. Surwal lake is good for birds in winter.
